How can one National Business Travel Association (NBTA) chapter help the environment and give free calling cards to U.S. soldiers fighting overseas? The answer is simple . . . get the members to donate all their old cell phones. 

 

Because the average cell phone is designed to last less than 18 months, over two million are dumped every week. Just one cell phone can pollute 132,000 liters of water. Less than 1% are donated or recycled.

 

As an organization, lets brace this opportunity to protect the environment. Please bring in old cell phones to the September meeting: whether its yours, co-workers', family members' etc. Bring chargers and accessories that correspond to the cell phones too.

 

Members are also encouraged to donate to help U.S. troops phone home. All phones are given to Cell Phones for Soldiers. This charity sells the old phones and converts the proceeds into pre-paid calling cards for soldiers. Each phone can provide about an hour of international talk time. 

 

Lets keep cell phones out of landfills and work toward building minutes for soldiers to come home!
